Has anyone else feel like they've grown up to be brainwashed against Communism and/or Socialism?

I remember growing up people would always say things like "f-ing commie!" and other such phrases. This made me grow a stigma towards communism and subsequently socialism before I even knew what those words meant. If it weren't for my mother being a hardcore socialist back in the day and having been involved in the communist party of Canada I would never have learned what it was really about. I mean, no one ever really explained it to me and whenever my teachers talked about it they briefly explained its dynamic and then dismissed it by saying it never worked before moving on. I felt like everyone around me was an expert on communism and socialism. It was only later on after I had done real research that I found out most people I thought knew a lot about it really knew nothing at all and based all their knowledge on recycled propaganda. I feel like this is more prevalent in the states having frequented this website for a while now. So back to my question, has anyone else felt like communism/socialism=Automatic Evil from growing up around a population who has developed that stigma?
