Should I keep old car parts after mechanic fixes my car?

When the mechanic changes the brake pads, or the alternator goes and I get it replaced, I have always asked for the parts back (I'm not really sure why I started this habit, I think it was something my dad told me to do). But now I have these old parts (from past repairs of the car I currently drive) and I'm thinking is there a reason to keep them?
